Article Icon 1Family: MARTA Killing Preventable

The family of a 66-year-old Atlanta grandmother fatally stabbed aboard a MARTA train in Atlanta on Saturday called for more police on the trains.

The daughter of Margaret Swan also raised concerns about the upcoming FIFA World Cup, questioning whether MARTA can safely handle hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Lt. Governor Burt Jones was among those to publicly condemn the attack, the second homicide connected to the system’s Oakland City station since late April.

MARTA says it employs 280 sworn officers and monitors its system with roughly 12,000 cameras. In Saturday’s attack, suspect John Elijah Matthews, 25, was arrested within a few minutes and now faces state and federal charges.

A European steel building systems maker will set up its North American headquarters at the Airport South industrial site in Macon, bringing up to 140 jobs.

Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal Building Solutions specializes in exterior walls and roofing that insulate and protect commercial properties. The company, a division of steel giant ArcelorMittal, employs more than 3,200 worldwide at 50-plus locations.

The investment will come in two phases: an initial $57 million creating up to 70 jobs, followed by another $50 million and up to 70 more positions. Construction is set to begin in late 2026.

“We’ve been focused on creating a competitive environment where global companies can succeed, and ArcelorMittal Building Solutions choosing Macon … is a strong validation of that strategy,” Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority Chairman Robby Fountain said.

Georgia claimed three of the top five spots on Southern Living’s list of the best beach towns in the South, including the No. 1 pick of St. Simons Island.

St. Simons Island earned praise for its wide tidal marshes, oak-canopied biking trails, fresh peel-and-eat shrimp, and the stately 1872 St. Simons Lighthouse.

Tybee Island took the No. 4 spot, and Jekyll Island landed at No. 5 in the magazine’s reader-selected rankings. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in Alabama and Hilton Head Island in South Carolina ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

The South’s best beaches feature “growing food scenes, colorful shopping districts, postcard-worthy views, and endless ways to frolic in the water,” the magazine said.
