Article Icon 1Georgia Tech and Emory Invest Over $1B for AI

Georgia Tech and Emory University in Atlanta announced Thursday they are putting more than $1 billion combined into artificial intelligence.

Emory’s share runs about $600 million and Georgia Tech’s tops $575 million. Emory has already put close to half of its money into recruiting and holding onto AI talent and experts in Atlanta.

The institutions say the money is meant to draw companies, workers, and federal research dollars to Georgia.

Both schools’ investments back an ambition the Atlanta mayor’s office has laid out: making the city a top-five technology and entrepreneurship hub.

Five DeKalb County Jail inmates have been charged with murder in the death of 24-year-old David Addo-Wright, who was found wounded in his cell last month.

The five inmates face multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. Addo-Wright was found unresponsive with several wounds on Sept. 23, and he died at a hospital.

Addo-Wright, of Covington, had been in the jail less than 48 hours and had already posted bond, his family says.

Family attorney Mawuli Davis said that several locks inside the jail are broken.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Article Icon 1Rabies Airdrop Begins in Northwest Georgia

Low-flying aircraft are scattering more than 500,000 oral rabies vaccine packets across 15 northwest Georgia counties this month in an effort to protect public health against the viral disease.

The drop zone covers more than 7,000 square kilometers. Helicopters started around Oct. 7, and airplanes begin around Oct. 20.

The packets, which are not harmful to pets, contain liquid vaccines and are coated with a fish-scented substance designed to attract raccoons and other wildlife.

Officials say to leave the baits alone and let wildlife find them, and that anyone who touches the liquid vaccine should wash their hands right away and notify their local health department.
