Mitsubishi Power Americas will invest $490 million to expand its gas turbine parts plant near Pooler, creating more than 220 jobs in Chatham County.

The expansion adds 450,000 square feet to the company’s Savannah Machinery Works, doubling its footprint in Georgia. Hiring will include manufacturing, operations, heavy machinery, and technician roles.

Gov. Brian Kemp said the project grew out of meetings with Mitsubishi Power and parent company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Tokyo. “We are excited that the Savannah Machinery Works is expanding to turn those possibilities into reality,” he said.

Savannah Economic Development Authority CEO Trip Tollison said it is the largest investment to date by Mitsubishi Power Americas. Company CEO Bill Newsom tied the expansion to growing demand for electricity.

Both suspects are now in custody in the killing of an 81-year-old bystander outside a Gainesville Walmart.

Erron Lamar Dorsey, 17, turned himself in to police in East Point on Friday. A Hall County SWAT team arrested Kamari Nehemiah Tilmuth, 18, at a Gainesville home last Sunday.

James Edward McDaniel of Lula, a Navy veteran and retired postal worker, was leaving the Shallowford Road store Oct. 14 when an argument inside spilled into the parking lot. Police say Tilmuth and Dorsey opened fire, and McDaniel was struck at the far end of the lot.

Both face charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Gainesville police thanked officers in East Point and Murfreesboro, Tennessee, for helping find Dorsey.

Bill Thorn, who ran in every Peachtree Road Race from the first one in 1970 through 2022, has died at 96.

Known as the “Iron Man of the Peachtree,” Thorn returned in 2023 as grand marshal, riding most of the route before crossing the finish line on foot one last time.

He was also one of Georgia’s most accomplished high school coaches, helping schools claim 42 state championships over 65 years. Most of that time came at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn, which he helped found in 1989.

“To honor Bill, let us carry forward his commitment to showing up year after year, encouraging those around us and embracing the enduring joy of running,” the Atlanta Track Club said.
