Article Icon 1Court Cancels Trump Election Case Hearing

A Georgia appeals court on Monday canceled oral arguments scheduled for Dec. 5 in former President-elect Donald Trump’s appeal seeking to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from prosecuting his election interference case.

The court provided no explanation for canceling the hearing in its one-line order: “The oral argument scheduled for December 5, 2024, is hereby canceled until further order of this Court.”

The cancellation comes after Trump and other defendants argued that Willis should be disqualified due to a past romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who resigned from the case after a previous ruling.

The court’s one-line decision raises questions about whether the proceedings might be indefinitely delayed, particularly as Trump is set to return to the White House in January.

Prosecutors rested their case Tuesday in the trial of Jose Ibarra, who is accused of killing Georgia nursing student Laken Riley on a university running trail in February.

Data from Riley’s smartwatch showed her heart stopped beating at 9:28 a.m. on Feb. 22, 8 minutes after she encountered Ibarra during her morning run, according to trial testimony.

Video evidence showed Ibarra discarding a dark hooded jacket, later confirmed to have Riley’s blood and DNA, with a roommate identifying Ibarra as the man in the footage.

Surveillance footage showed a man matching Ibarra’s appearance near the crime scene hours before the murder, and an FBI agent testified that Ibarra had taken selfies wearing clothing similar to that seen in the video.

Article Icon 1Private School Voucher Website Launches

Georgia has launched a website to prepare families for its new private-school voucher program set to begin in July 2025.

The Georgia Promise Scholarship program, approved by Republican lawmakers this year, will provide eligible K-12 students up to $6,500 annually for private school tuition and other educational expenses.

The initiative targets students in the lowest-performing 25% of public schools.

The initiative, capped at $140 million annually, faced criticism from Democrats who argue it will divert money from public schools while providing insufficient funding to cover most private school tuition costs.
