Article Icon 1Kemp Weighs Election Board Fate

Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia has requested legal guidance from the State Attorney General on whether he can legally remove State Election Board members.

The State Election Board’s three-person Republican majority passed new rules allowing county election board officials to conduct “reasonable inquiries” into apparent voting discrepancies before certifying election results.

Gov. Kemp has received pushback from lawmakers of both parties opposed to the new election rules, with Democrat Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign filing suit on Monday to challenge the new certification rules.

A judge ruled that four independent and third-party candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Jill Stein, cannot appear on Georgia’s presidential ballot.

The decision now awaits confirmation from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, which is due before Georgia starts mailing ballots to military and overseas voters on September 17.

If upheld, the judge’s ruling will limit the presidential race in Georgia to Kamala Harris, Donald Trump, and Libertarian Chase Oliver.

Jim Beard, Atlanta’s former chief financial officer, was sentenced Monday to three years in prison after pleading guilty to federal program theft and obstructing an IRS audit.

Prosecutors said Beard exploited Atlanta city funds to cover personal expenses, including travel for himself and others, and misrepresented these expenses to the IRS.

He also illegally acquired two machine guns under the guise that they were for the Atlanta Police Department.
