Schools Bring Back Cursive

Georgia public schools will reintroduce cursive writing into the grades 3–5 curriculum as part of the state’s new English language arts standards.

The standards also require the teaching of print handwriting starting in kindergarten, aiming to boost writing fluency and cognitive development.

State education officials say cursive supports literacy and helps dyslexic students. Some parents question the practicality of cursive in a digital, tech-driven world.

Heat Dome to Bake Region

Georgians can expect a blistering stretch of heat, with heat index values expected to reach 100 to 108 degrees through Saturday, driven by a “heat dome” settling over the region.

The National Weather Service issued advisories across North and Central Georgia, especially for today and Wednesday.

Ocean temperatures in some spots off the Georgia coast are in the mid-80s, adding to health risks for swimmers and beachgoers.

Fishing Contests Return

The state Department of Natural Resources challenged anglers to earn bragging rights for the year with the return of two yearly contests: the Trout Slam and Bass Slam.

The Trout Slam requires catching all three native trout species—Rainbow, Brown, and Brook—while the Bass Slam ups the ante by requiring five of 10 eligible bass varieties, including largemouth and Bartram’s bass.

Winners snag certificates, stickers, and a chance at a grand prize.

In other outdoor news, additional state laws that impact fishing and hunting take effect July 1, including a wider ban on bow fishing for catfish and expanded rules for hunting gear.
