Governor candidate Rick Jackson and U.S. Senate nominee Mike Collins will join President Trump at a Republican rally in Dalton on Friday.

On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance met supporters during a stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport ahead of a fundraiser, joined by Collins and U.S. Rep. Brian Jack of Peachtree City.

Trump is set to speak at 3 p.m. Friday at the Dalton airport. His third Georgia visit this year comes as early voting hit a midterm record on its first day, topping 2022 turnout by more than 40,000.

In other election news, campaign finance reports show Jackson’s campaign spent nearly $114 million through July, compared with about $5.2 million for Democrat governor candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Article Icon 1Court Rules Fire Protection Fee Illegal

The state Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Chatham County’s fire protection fee was an illegal tax, upholding an order to refund nearly $27 million plus interest.

The county charged property owners in unincorporated areas from July 2022 through June 2024, using a flat $100 rate plus a square-footage charge.

State law requires property taxes to be based on property value.

Residents Damon and Sebrell Smith filed the class action lawsuit in 2023, and those who paid the fee are entitled to refunds. The county has since accounted for fire safety costs in its property tax rate.
