Article Icon 1THC Potency Under Heavy Debate

Crossover Day featured multiple bills advancing regarding the use of medical cannabis and THC-infused consumable products in the state.

One would allow more THC in medical cannabis, while two others would put new limits on THC in consumable hemp products. THC is the ingredient that gives users a high.

Senate Bill 220, also known as the “Putting Georgia’s Patients First Act” would raise the allowable THC limit in medical cannabis from 5% to 50%, remove the restriction against vaping cannabis oil, remove “severe or end-stage” requirements, and add more diseases to the list of qualifying conditions.

Senate Bill 33 seeks to cap THC content in hemp products to 0.3%, and SB 254 would impose a stricter limit on THC in beverages. Speaking out against higher levels of THC in beverages, state Senate Majority Leader Bill Cowsert, R-Athens, said, “We are putting loaded guns in people’s hands in the form of a can.”

The weekend forecast anticipates a line of strong storms moving through Georgia that could produce severe weather in much of the state.

Following scattered storms early Saturday, North and Central Georgia could experience dangerous weather overnight into Sunday morning, forecasters say.

The Storm Prediction Center classified the system as an Enhanced Risk, or Level 3 out of 5, with the possibility of tornadoes, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, and hail.

With rain expected throughout the weekend, the area at most risk of flooding is northwest Georgia, according to the National Weather Service.

Article Icon 1Utility Linemen Honored for Hurricane Response

State lawmakers this week honored utility workers for their long hours in hazardous conditions to restore power to thousands of Georgians in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

On Tuesday, lawmakers hosted a special event at the state Capitol recognizing linemen and also proclaiming the day as “Georgia Linemen Day.”

Hurricane Helene was the most destructive storm in Georgia Power’s 140-year history, causing more than 11,800 broken power poles, 1,500 miles of downed power lines, and 5,800 damaged transformers.

In April, utilities across the country will celebrate Lineworker Appreciation Month, and Georgia Power plans a social media campaign to share workers’ stories from Hurricane Helene and provide a look into their daily lives.
