Article Icon 1Hurricane Relief Tops Kemp’s Priorities 

Gov. Brian Kemp told lawmakers that he will emphasize Hurricane Helene relief in the legislative session that begins Jan. 13.

House Speaker Jon Burns, R-Newington, said grants for growers and local communities, along with tax credits for replanting, are likely.

Other legislative priorities listed by Kemp, who spoke at a three-day lawmaker conference in Athens, include tort reform, education, and public safety.

November’s elections produced a 100-80 Republican majority in the state House and a 33-23 Republican majority in the state Senate.

  Article Icon 1Boil Advisory for Forsyth County

Residents, businesses, and schools in parts of Forsyth County went under a boil water advisory starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday following a major water main break.

The advisory will remain in place for at least 48 hours.

Those affected should boil all water used for drinking and cooking for at least one full minute after reaching a full boil. Click here for a description of the impacted area.

A record number of travelers are expected to fill Georgia’s roadways, airports, and cruise lines for the year-end holiday period from Dec. 21-Jan. 1.

Travel group AAA predicts that 3.7 million Georgians will travel 50 miles or more from home, up from last year and narrowly topping the record set in 2019, before the Covid pandemic.

AAA also forecasts an increase in travel across the U.S, noting lower gas prices than a year ago and a 10% jump in bookings for buses, trains, and cruises.
