Twelve inmates face murder charges in the Jan. 11 gang-affiliated riot at Washington State Prison in Davisboro that left four inmates dead.

The state Department of Corrections said the inmates are charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, gang participation, and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution.

The fight took place in an outdoor area of the medium-security facility. Guards used non-lethal weapons to bring the fighting under control in about 90 minutes.

The four inmates who died ranged in age from 23 to 42. A dozen other inmates were injured.

Crews broke ground on a new dental school campus in Savannah backed by $178 million in state funding, the latest step in Georgia’s push to address a statewide dentist shortage.

The campus—an extension of Augusta University’s Dental College of Georgia, the state’s only dental school—will enroll 50 dental students and 20 dental hygiene students per class.

State officials said the goal is to train more dental professionals and encourage them to stay and practice in Georgia, especially in underserved communities.

State data shows Georgia ranks near the bottom nationally in dentists per capita, with about 20 counties lacking a single practicing dentist.
