Article Icon 1Immigration Arrest Prompts Questions

Legal questions emerged following Florida authorities’ one-day jailing of Juan Lopez Gomez, 20, of Cairo, on an immigration hold.

Gomez was freed after his mother presented his birth certificate and Social Security card to a judge in Leon County, Florida, who found no probable cause for the arrest.

At the same time, however, the judge questioned whether local courts had the authority to block a separate 48-hour hold requested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Gomez was traveling with a group from Georgia to Tallahassee for his construction job. It is unclear if he presented documents proving his citizenship to the arresting officers.

A search continued for two suspects after a bounty hunter and the fugitive he was targeting were found dead at a Stockbridge apartment complex last week.

Bail recovery agent Curtis Johnson, 46, was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend fugitive Edward Atkins at the complex on Wednesday.

Police said they are searching for two unidentified people who were reportedly in the area at the time of the shooting.

One of Johnson’s co-workers called him a calm and loyal partner who saved lives on the job, saying, “If it wasn’t for that man, I probably wouldn’t be standing here talking to you today.”
