Judge Blocks Student Deportations

A federal judge in Atlanta has issued a temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration from deporting 133 international students and ordered their student visa status reinstated.

Judge Victoria Calvert’s Friday ruling came after attorneys argued in federal court that 133 international students’ visas were illegally revoked; 26 have ties to Georgia.

An attorney for several Georgia-based students said none of his clients have felony convictions, noting many faced only minor violations like unpaid tickets or traffic infractions.

The temporary restraining order expires May 2, with another hearing scheduled for next Thursday.

Kemp To Sign Tort Reform

Gov. Brian Kemp will sign a lawsuit reform package on Monday, enacting tort reform, which makes it harder to sue businesses for incidents occurring on their property.

The measure was part of Kemp’s key legislative priorities for the year and backed by small business owners statewide frustrated with “frivolous” lawsuits, excessive jury awards, and rising insurance premiums.

Critics argue that Senate Bill 68 would make it more difficult for those seeking damages to receive justice against wrongdoers.
