The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved a permit for construction of the $2.3 billion Savannah Container Terminal at the Port of Savannah, following a three-year review.

The 350-acre Hutchinson Island terminal will add capacity for 3.5 million container units and handle the largest ships. Construction is set to begin in January 2028 and fully finish by the mid-2030s.

Combined with a $1.6 billion Ocean Terminal upgrade, the project would lift Savannah’s container capacity from 7.75 million to 12 million units, port leaders said.

“To be announcing that we’re opening a 3.5 million-TEU facility—that’s not happening anywhere else in the United States of America. It’s truly amazing,” Georgia Ports Authority CEO Griff Lynch said.

About 20% of leaves have started to change colors at the highest elevations of far North Georgia, the state forestry commission reported in its weekly leaf-watch update.

Sourwoods are already adding red around Black Rock Lake in Rabun County, while yellow leaves are beginning to show in Dade County.

The mountains should peak from late October through the first week of November, with northwest Georgia following in the first half of November.

Metro Atlanta typically hits peak color in early to mid-November, with the south side of the metro turning last. Central and south Georgia usually peak from mid- to late November.
