Diesel Prices Hit Record

Georgia’s average diesel price climbed to $5.66 per gallon this weekend, the highest ever recorded in the state, according to AAA.

Gasoline prices also rose for the holiday weekend. AAA put the statewide average at $3.89 as of Sunday, up about $1 per gallon from last year. 

Nationally, diesel set a record of $5.85 on Friday as the war with Iran disrupts fuel supplies, raising transportation costs for everyday goods.

When adjusted for inflation, diesel prices have been higher in the past, including ahead of the 2008 financial crisis when companies paid $4.74 a gallon, the equivalent of $7.20 today.

  Labor Day Focus: Macon Jobs Shift

Two decades after cigarette maker Brown & Williamson dominated local industry before closing, Macon’s job market has diversified across manufacturing, health care, education, and logistics, a Labor Day report by The Macon Telegraph found.

Macon’s jobless rate of 3.8% slightly tops the state’s rate, but new employers keep arriving, including ArcelorMittal Building Solutions’ 70- to 140-worker North American headquarters and Unified Legacy’s $125 million, nearly 500-worker plant.

The newer arrivals join large employers that include Mercer University, Middle Georgia State University, Atrium Health Navicent, GEICO, Amazon, and nearby Robins Air Force Base.

The cigarette plant once employed 3,000 workers before closing in 2006. Today, about 7,500 people in the Macon area work in manufacturing, an increase of about 1,500 from five years ago, according to a Mercer University economist.
