Inland Port Opens

The Georgia Ports Authority opened the Gainesville Inland Port, completing a project nearly nine years in the making.

The $134 million facility connects to the Port of Savannah via Norfolk Southern rail, giving regional shippers a faster alternative to a 600-mile round-trip truck haul.

Formerly known as the Blue Ridge Connector, the 104-acre terminal is built to serve hundreds of manufacturers, including poultry, heavy equipment, and forest product companies. At full build-out, the facility will handle 200,000 containers annually.

The port authority estimates the inland port will eliminate roughly 26,000 long-haul truck trips in its first year alone, reducing truck traffic around Atlanta and cutting CO2 emissions by nearly 80%.

Early Voting on Record Pace

Early voting in Georgia continues at a record pace ahead of the May 19 primary, with more than 250,000 ballots cast.

The number represents a 28% jump over the comparable period in the 2022 off-year primary.

Primary voters are choosing for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, congressional seats, and a U.S. Senate race.

Early voting runs through May 15.

Glen Powell Films in Macon

Hollywood arrived in Macon, where Glen Powell is filming scenes for The Comeback King through May 15.

The Judd Apatow-directed comedy follows a country music star navigating life after a dramatic career downfall. Powell stars alongside Madelyn Cline and Cristin Milioti.

Filming sites include the College Hill neighborhood and Mercer University’s campus, with crews also working on MLK Jr. Blvd, Cherry Street, and Second Street in downtown Macon.

Residents and commuters should plan for road and sidewalk closures through mid-month.

“It’s a great day in Macon-Bibb when our beautiful community will be featured on the big screen,” Mayor Lester Miller said. “I’m very excited to see Mercer University, downtown, and many other locations featured so prominently.”
