Article Icon 1School Changes Signed into Law

Gov. Brian Kemp signed a package of education bills into law, including an emphasis on phonics-based teaching in K-3 classrooms and the hiring of reading coaches for every elementary school.

Another new law extends Georgia’s existing K-8 device ban to high schools starting next school year. Other measures update math curriculum standards and add teacher support provisions.

Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns, R-Newington, praised the education package, saying, “We’ll be making a generational difference in the lives of our children and for generations yet to come.”

The emphasis on early reading was prompted by tests showing more than 60% of the state’s third graders read below grade level, among the lowest rates in the nation.

Article Icon 1Ted Turner Remembered

Ted Turner, the Atlanta cable TV mogul who founded CNN and TBS and once owned the Atlanta Braves and Hawks, died Wednesday at 87.

Turner broadcast the Braves games nationally on WTBS, helping build a fanbase that stretched far beyond Georgia. The team won the 1995 World Series under his ownership.

Gov. Brian Kemp joined others in paying tribute, saying, “Ted Turner led a life as big as the American Dream he lived.” President Trump called Turner “one of the Greats of All Time.”

Turner died surrounded by family at his current home near Tallahassee, Florida, following a long battle with Lewy body dementia.

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Mercedes-Benz Stadium will keep its fan-friendly food and drink prices in place for all eight World Cup matches the stadium will host this summer.

Soccer fans traveling from around the globe will find the same $2 hot dog and $2 soda deals that make the venue among the best values in sports.

Also for fans, plans are taking shape for the free FIFA Fan Fest from June 11 through July 15 at Centennial Olympic Park, featuring giant TV screens, music, and local food favorites.
