Unmarked Orphanage Burial Site Discovered at Park

Trail construction at Decatur’s Legacy Park has been paused after ground-penetrating radar revealed a burial site that consists of as many as 33 unmarked burials—including 22 children and eight infants—from a 19th-century orphanage.

Legacy Park is located at the site where the United Methodist Children’s Home existed for 144 years before it was sold to the City of Decatur in 2017.

City officials plan to reroute the trail around the burial site and establish a memorial to honor those interred.

“I’m glad that we’re taking our time over at Legacy [Park] to make sure that those souls [have their] final resting place,” Mayor Pro Tem Tony Powers said.

  Atlanta High School Grad Inspires Others With Work Ethic

Mykale Baker, the metro Atlanta high school graduate who recently went viral, will attend Gwinnett Technical College this fall to study auto mechanics.

Late last month, Baker gained national attention after a customer, Maria Mendoza, shared a video on social media of Baker working his Burger King shift immediately after his high school graduation ceremony, still wearing his graduation medals.

Mendoza then launched a GoFundMe campaign for Baker’s college expenses that has now raised over $230,000.

Fulton County Bans Student Cell Phone Use In Classrooms

Fulton County’s school board has unanimously voted to ban personal electronic devices for K–8 students during the school day. High schoolers will also be required to stow their phones during instructional time.

The policy will take effect after the summer break.

Earlier this week, Rockdale County Public Schools also announced its plans to implement similar electronic device restrictions in classrooms for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Last month, Gov. Brian Kemp signed House Bill 340, establishing a statewide ban on personal electronic devices for K–8 students during the entire school day starting in summer 2026.
