Article Icon 1Report: Four Georgia Soldiers Killed in Lithuania

Four U.S. Army soldiers from Fort Stewart reportedly died during a training exercise in eastern Lithuania near the Belarus border, NATO’s chief said Wednesday. Their names were not immediately released.

U.S. officials had not confirmed the deaths as of Wednesday afternoon. A Fort Stewart spokesperson said the soldiers have not yet been found and cannot be confirmed as deceased.

Lithuanian media reported the soldiers, part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, may have drowned after their armored vehicle became trapped in swampy terrain.

About 1,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed in Lithuania. The country recently began mining its borders with Russia and Belarus to step up NATO defenses in the area.

State lawmakers passed a bill that prohibits cellphone and other electronic device use during the school day in grades K-8. The measure now goes to Gov. Brian Kemp for his signature or veto.

State Senators voted 54-2 in support of the legislation, which aims to reduce distractions and promote more socializing within schools. Local districts with bans already in place have seen “remarkable success,” state Sen. Jason Esteves said.

Nationally, nine states ban phones in schools, with more set to join them as New Mexico, Tennessee, and Utah join Georgia in advancing bills this year. Critics cite concerns about student safety and enforcement.
