Georgia observed Labor Day on Monday with union celebrations, a workers’ march, and sobering traffic fatality statistics.

In Macon, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers highlighted its growing ranks and longtime members such as Marsha Selby, who broke gender barriers in the trades.

In Atlanta, marchers rallied under the banner “Workers Over Billionaires.”

The long weekend also brought tragedy: Georgia State Patrol reported 15 traffic deaths. Troopers also reported 284 crashes and more than 400 DUI arrests.

  Article Icon 1 Multi-Vehicle Wreck Closes I-75

A chain-reaction crash on Monday afternoon on I-75 in Bartow County sent four people to the hospital and shut down the southbound lanes for about three hours.

A 7-year-old ejected from a truck was airlifted to a hospital in unknown condition.

The incident began when a car struck a Toyota Camry in the northbound lanes, leading to more crashes that spilled over to the southbound lanes. A total of five vehicles were involved.

The driver suspected of causing the initial crash fled the scene.

As the Atlantic hurricane season heads toward its Sept. 10 peak, Georgia weather is forecast to stay warm and calm.

Meteorologists gave a storm system off Africa a 60% chance of forming into Tropical Storm Gabrielle, though it’s expected to stay over open water for now.

The forecast for metro Atlanta calls for a dry, sunny week with temperatures climbing to the low 90s by Friday.

Long-range forecasts predict a warm, dry start to fall across the state, according to the Farmers’ Almanac, Old Farmer’s Almanac, and National Weather Service models.
