Hurricane Helene Could Bring Havoc  

Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall in Florida on Thursday and move into Georgia, bringing heavy rain, tropical-storm-force winds, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes to the region.

The storm could bring significant impacts to north Georgia, including heavy rain of more than 5 inches in some areas from Wednesday to Friday morning, leading to flooding.

Winds of 39 mph or higher, with stronger gusts, could cause trees to fall and potential power outages across the state.

Ahead of the storm, a front approaching from the west will interact with tropical moisture, leading to scattered downpours and thunderstorms, while isolated severe storms are also possible on Tuesday.

  Voter Eligibility Challenges to be Investigated in Eight Counties  

The State Election Board voted on Monday to investigate allegations that eight Democratic-led county election boards are not properly handling voter eligibility challenges.

DeKalb County Republican Party Chairwoman Marci McCarthy requested a thorough review of how counties handle these cases, citing concerns over voters registered at non-residential addresses or those who may have moved.

Janice Johnston said some election officials may have been reluctant to investigate voter challenges due to letters from Democratic lawyer Marc Elias threatening legal action.

“This appears to have interfered with the duty of registrars to hear challenges and review the qualifications of voters on the county voter list,” Johnston stated.

Sen. Ossoff Proposes Fresh Food Act

Senator Jon Ossoff introduced the Fresh Food Act of 2024 to address food insecurity in Georgia by increasing access to fresh food in underserved areas (often referred to as “food deserts”) and supporting local farmers.

The bill proposes tax incentives for grocery stores that open in communities with limited access to fresh food and additional incentives for sourcing food from local growers.

Over 50% of the state’s census tracts are categorized as “low-access,” with residents in rural areas often living more than 10 miles from a food store.

The initiative has received broad support from local leaders, including Valdosta Mayor Scott James Matheson, who emphasized that this effort could significantly impact food security and health outcomes in rural Georgia.
