Georgia voters shook up state leadership Tuesday, handing Democrats two seats on the state Public Service Commission. Voters also re-elected Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.

In the PSC races, Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard defeated GOP incumbents Tim Echols and Fitz Johnson for seats on the five-member board, which sets rates and influences energy policy.

In Atlanta, Dickens avoided a runoff to win a second term as mayor after campaigning on a drop in violent crime and gains in affordable housing.

Article Icon 1 Weiss Eager to Lead Braves

Walt Weiss voiced confidence following his promotion to Atlanta Braves manager, saying, “I know this team like the back of my hand.”

The longtime Braves assistant coach spoke on Tuesday, a day after the club announced his selection, ending a 33-day search that ultimately led to a familiar face.

Weiss, 61, inherits a talented roster that underperformed last season following a six-year division title streak under manager Brian Snitker, who moved into an advisory role.

Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos praised Weiss’ experience, character, and work ethic. “This is exactly what we want here,” he said.

Frost and freeze warnings were already in effect across the region.
