Article Icon 1Search Called Off for Missing Attorney

Formal search efforts for missing Dallas attorney Charles Hosch were suspended in the Blood Mountain wilderness area after nearly two weeks without new leads.

Hosch, 67, a Gainesville native, went missing Nov. 11 while hiking a familiar trail. He reportedly reached the summit of Blood Mountain but never returned from the descent.

Family members said they will continue searching.

Hosch also worked as an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where students praised him as a caring teacher and mentor.

Authorities seized more than 1,500 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in blackberry shipments during drug busts in Hall County and Atlanta.

The drugs, worth tens of millions of dollars, were found in two refrigerated trucks. Authorities suspect the drugs were trafficked in from Mexico.

Gerardo Solorio-Alvarado, 44, of Gainesville, and two others were arrested, and authorities said more arrests may follow in one of the region’s largest meth busts.

“I know it’s disturbing to the public to realize such large amounts of illegal drugs are being trafficked into our community, but I hope citizens take comfort in knowing the Hall County Sheriff’s Office has investigators who are dedicated to curbing drug activity,” Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said. Federal and state authorities are also participating in the investigation.

Article Icon 1Most H.S. Player Suspensions Upheld

The Georgia High School Association upheld 35 of the 39 player suspensions issued after a benches-clearing brawl during a football playoff game Friday.

Gainesville High School had appealed the suspensions, saying many of the players went on the field to de-escalate the fighting.

Gainesville is scheduled to play Langston Hughes on Friday night.

GHSA Executive Director Tim Scott said the key issue was that the players violated a rule against leaving the sideline. “We have to follow the bylaw,” he said.

The fight broke out in the third quarter of the team’s playoff game against Brunswick, with Gainesville leading 42-0. Gainesville’s coach said some players initially rushed the field after an unhelmeted teammate was targeted in a blindside tackle by a Brunswick player.
