Apalachee High Father Convicted

A Barrow County jury on Tuesday found Colin Gray guilty of second-degree murder and other charges for allowing his son— the student accused in the Apalachee High School shooting—access to a gun.

Gray, who will be sentenced at a later date, appeared to be mostly emotionless as the verdicts were read. Afterward, he stood up behind the defense table and was placed in handcuffs.

The jury deliberated for 1 hour and 48 minutes.

A defense attorney questioned the speed of the verdict, given the novelty and complexities of the legal issues. An outside attorney said the verdict sends a clear message to parents who may face similar situations.

  Judge Clears Way for Clemency Hearing

A Fulton County judge lifted a hold on the Georgia parole board’s clemency process for death row inmate Stacey Humphreys, clearing the way for a final hearing.

Judge Robert McBurney ordered parole board member Kimberly McCoy to recuse herself, citing a conflict tied to her past work as a victim advocate and her relationship with the victims’ families.

McBurney ruled the remaining members can proceed, rejecting arguments that all five members must participate.

Humphreys was convicted in 2007 in the 2003 killings of Cyndi Williams and Lori Brown in Powder Springs. His execution date had been set for December.

Hunting, Fishing Expo Set for Debut

Georgia Outdoor News will host its first South Georgia Spring Sportsman Expo on Friday and Saturday in Tifton.

Billed as a two-day mix of hunting and fishing gear, seminars, and outdoor community events, the show will run from noon to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center.
