Adriana Smith, a 31-year-old Georgia nurse declared brain dead and put on life support in February, gave birth to a baby boy via cesarean section.

The infant was delivered on Friday, about six months into Smith’s pregnancy, and remains in the NICU, weighing 1 pound, 13 ounces.

“He’s expected to be okay. He’s just fighting. We just want prayers for him,” said April Newkirk, who is Smith’s mother.

The pregnancy drew national attention after Emory University Hospital put Smith on life support due to Georgia’s fetal heartbeat law, which bans abortion after fetal cardiac activity is detected.

A Duluth man pleaded not guilty Monday to federal charges that he left threatening voicemails targeting Republican U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Deb Fischer of Nebraska.

Prosecutors say Robert Davis Forney, 25, threatened sexual violence against the lawmakers and Cruz’s family in January.

The case comes amid heightened national concern over political violence.

Forney was indicted on June 10 and faces charges of communicating threats in interstate commerce, a crime punishable by fines and prison time.
