Jones Enters Governor Race

Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones entered the 2026 governor’s race Tuesday.

Jones pitched himself as a President Trump-aligned conservative ready to eliminate the state income tax, fight fentanyl, and expand school choice.

A former state senator and University of Georgia football captain, Jones leads the GOP field in fundraising with $14 million on hand.

Jones faces state Attorney General Chris Carr in the GOP primary to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Brian Kemp. Democratic candidates include former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and state Sen. Jason Esteves.

  Extreme Heat to Stick Around

Georgia will experience extreme heat this week, with heat index values reaching above 100 degrees. Scattered afternoon storms are expected through the weekend.

The National Weather Service warned of possible heat advisories, especially in central and eastern parts of the state.

Atlanta opened a cooling center, and public health officials urged residents to stay hydrated.

California Matches Georgia’s Film Incentives

California doubled its film tax credits to $750 million, matching Georgia’s nation-leading incentives.

The move also comes as California and Georgia struggle to compete with European countries.

Georgia remains a film production heavyweight, boasting major studios, a deep pool of workers, and a favorable business climate.

Still, annual spending on film production in the state has dropped to $2.6 billion from $4.4 billion since 2022, amid various obstacles.
