More than 15,000 Georgia families applied for the state’s new Promise Scholarship school vouchers, with about 8,600 of them meeting eligibility requirements.

The program offers up to $6,500 in private tuition or homeschool funding for students who would otherwise attend public schools that rank in the bottom 25% academically in the state.

State lawmakers agreed to fund as many as 21,000 scholarships in the program’s first year, leaving room for more applicants. The first round of payments went out this month.

Gov. Brian Kemp announced an agreement between Georgia’s technical and university systems to create a streamlined path for nursing students.

Under the new 2+2 model, graduates with associate degrees in nursing can seamlessly transfer into university nursing programs.

The move aims to address nursing shortages, especially in rural areas.

Supporters say the option will also strengthen the healthcare workforce and expand student opportunities.
