Article Icon 1Student Threat Proposal Unveiled

State House Speaker Jon Burns unveiled a school safety proposal that aims to enhance collaboration between educational institutions and law enforcement agencies.

The plan calls for establishing a database that tracks student mental health and threat histories, an app for anonymous threat reporting, and school district safety management plans.

The measure also seeks to hike penalties for making terroristic threats and offers tax incentives to encourage the secure storage of firearms.

The proposal drew the support of Richard Aspinwall, whose son was among the four victims of the September 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School.

Unseasonably warm temperatures arrived across the state this week, but meteorologists are warning of a “false spring” that will likely give way to cooler temperatures starting Monday.

“Enjoy it while it lasts!” Atlanta Fox 5 meteorologist Joanna Feldman posted as she and other weather experts offered their take on this week’s warmup.

Tuesday’s high in metro Atlanta reached the mid-and upper-70s, approaching the February record of 83 set in 2019. This was a major reversal from January’s cold snaps and two snowstorms.

The weather outlook from the National Weather Service calls for metro Atlanta’s daily highs to stay in the low to upper 70s until Monday. Rain showers are possible daily starting today.
