Article Icon 1Senator Reacts to Postmaster’s Exit

A leader in Georgia’s year-long fight against slow mail delivery reacted to Tuesday’s news that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy will step down.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff called for a replacement who “will swiftly restore normal service that Georgia families and businesses can rely on.”

Georgia’s delivery issues began after the February 2024 opening of a new mail process center in Palmetto. By July, the state’s mail delivery ranked as the worst in the nation.

In December, Ossoff and DeJoy tangled at a Senate hearing, with Ossoff saying the postal service failed to deliver on its promise to fix the delays.

  Article Icon 1Southern Accents Changing?

Linguistic specialists from two of the state’s universities report that Georgians are losing their accents, with the change happening fastest among people in their 20s.

Researchers from the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech are digitizing and analyzing 100 years of recordings to map out changing speech patterns.

We saw that there was a big shift for our youngest speakers in Gen Z, where the traditional accent that you might associate with Georgia or especially Metro Atlanta, has changed a lot over time,” researcher Jon Forrest said.

The loss of the Southern twang and drawl is also occurring in other states in the region. The researchers said it is tied to education and waves of people moving into cities, resulting in new speech patterns reflecting “all those different inputs.”

Recent Grammy winner Beyonce added a third local date to her “Cowboy Carter” tour stop, with shows set for July 10-11 and July 13 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The full lineup of scheduled concerts showcases multiple genres, including bluegrass (Billy Strings, Feb. 21-22, State Farm Arena) and hip hop (Nelly with Ja Rule and Eve, Cellairis Amphitheatre, Sept. 12).
