Article Icon 1Officials Warn of Rough Surf

While Hurricane Erin isn’t forecast to hit land in the U.S., the storm is stirring up dangerous water conditions for beaches in Georgia and other coastal states.

A high surf advisory was extended for Georgia and South Carolina beaches until Thursday night, with waves up to 6 feet possible.

Beachgoers are urged to avoid water more than ankle-deep.

Meanwhile, two new tropical systems are brewing in the Atlantic as hurricane season approaches its late August through mid-September peak.

Jury selection is set for this week in Carroll County for the retrial of Buchanan Mayor A.J. Scott, a former Georgia state trooper charged in a 2015 crash that killed two teenage girls.

Prosecutors say Scott was driving over 90 mph without lights or sirens when his vehicle slammed into a turning car occupied by the teenagers. Two others were seriously injured.

A mistrial was declared in Scott’s 2019 trial.

Apalachee High football coach Kevin Saunders said the team’s first win since 2021 “meant a lot” to the community a year after a deadly mass shooting at the school.

The Wildcats ended their 29-game losing streak with a 29-9 home win over Chattahoochee High on Saturday.

“It had been a long time, and the school had been through a rough patch both on and off the field. The kids really needed it,” said Saunders, who brought in a mental health coach to assist with the team.

Last fall, two students and two teachers were killed in the shooting at the Winder school, including Richard Aspinwall, the football team’s defensive coordinator. Seven others were injured.
