Kemp Endorses Collins

Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday endorsed Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Collins in his bid to unseat Democrat U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, saying the state’s future demands a different direction.

Kemp had backed Derek Dooley in the primary before Collins won the June runoff 55.5% to 45.5%.

Collins said he was grateful for the governor’s support. Elsewhere, Collins criticized Ossoff over the Laken Riley Act, claiming Ossoff supported the measure only after it was set to pass.

On Sunday, the candidates made separate stops in Athens. In response to Kemp’s endorsement, an Ossoff campaign spokesperson pointed to the governor’s previous endorsement of Collins’ primary opponent.

  Gas Tops $4

Georgia drivers are now paying an average of $4.01 per gallon for regular gas, up 12 cents in a week and $1.12 more than a year ago.

Diesel prices rose to a record $6.28 per gallon, up from $3.55 a year ago and 62 cents higher than a week earlier.

Nationally, the average gas price jumped 17 cents to $4.31. Crude oil above $100 per barrel is driving the increase, AAA said, even as demand typically declines after Labor Day.

More Heat Awaits

A high-pressure system will keep temperatures above normal across north and central Georgia late into September, the National Weather Service said.

In the coastal region, forecasters called for more record-to-near-record heat, with better, breezier conditions expected by midweek.

In North Georgia, highs of 90 degrees and higher will persist through the week.

Looking ahead, the NOAA Climate Prediction Center said there’s a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño this fall and winter, which typically means wetter and cooler conditions for Georgia. The center estimates a 69% chance that this El Niño exceeds the strength of any since 1950.
