Article Icon 1 Fast Action Limited School Tragedy

Quick action by dozens of teachers rapidly pressing their “alert” buttons during the Apalachee High shooting helped minimize the carnage, police officials said.

Sheriff Jud Smith said the shooting incident occurred within about one minute, and that several factors, including the teachers’ actions, kept the casualty list from being worse.

Students in Gray’s algebra class played a crucial role by refusing reentry to the shooter when he attempted to come back into the classroom. He then began firing into the hall before entering another classroom.

The situation ended when two school security personnel, both equipped with handguns, confronted the shooter, which led to his immediate surrender.

U.S. Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff announced that Georgia would receive over $37 million from the federal government to make streets safer.

This funding aims to enhance road safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers across various Georgia communities, improving connectivity and the overall quality of life.

Significant investments include $10 million for the Buckhead Community Improvement District to build a half-mile path along with an elevated pedestrian and bicycle bridge and $9.2 million for the City of Carrollton for safer walking and biking routes.

Additionally, the City of Savannah will receive nearly $10 million for intersection upgrades to enhance pedestrian safety.

Billionaire MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, donated $10 million to Access to Capital for Entrepreneurs (ACE), significantly impacting the nonprofit’s ability to support small businesses throughout Georgia.

The funds are earmarked to implement ACE’s five-year strategic plan, which includes lending $300 million to 1,500 small businesses and offering over 100,000 hours of business advisory services.

This financial boost will enable ACE to expand its reach and enhance the support services it provides to the entrepreneurial community in Georgia.
