Article Icon 1Weather Radar Service Restored

Public access to radar data from five National Weather Service sites in the Southeast, including one near Valdosta, was restored Monday after a three-day technical outage.

Access went dark to the public from Saturday until Monday. Forecasters could see the data internally, but the radar data and maps weren’t reaching TV stations, apps, or websites.

The outage coincided with a period when heavy rain soaked South Georgia. On Monday, rain lingered ahead of drier and cooler air. A potential tropical system forming in the Gulf could bring rain this weekend.

Article Icon 1Gas Tax Pause Lowers Prices

Georgia’s average gas price fell 33 cents to $3.86 a gallon over the past week, as Gov. Brian Kemp’s suspension of the state gas tax went into effect.

Kemp declared a state of emergency on Sept. 28 to pause the tax through Oct. 29, saving drivers 33.3 cents per gallon on gasoline and 37.3 cents on diesel.

AAA also credits crude oil prices falling into the low $90s per barrel for part of the drop.

Average statewide prices are about 96 cents higher than a year ago. Albany reported the state’s lowest metro average at $3.67, while metro Atlanta was highest at $3.91.

Article Icon 19 Towns Named Best for Retirees

A WorldAtlas list names nine small towns as the state’s best for retirees, from Blue Ridge and Dahlonega in the mountains to Darien and St. Marys on the coast.

The list also includes Helen, Toccoa, Madison, Senoia, and Thomasville.

The report also notes Georgia residents 65 and older can exclude up to $65,000 of retirement income from state income tax, and that the state does not tax Social Security benefits.

“Add mild winters, no estate tax, and county homestead exemptions that wipe out school taxes for seniors in a lot of places, and the arithmetic gets interesting fast,” the report states.
