Article Icon 1Hurricane Season Starts on High Alert

Sunday marked the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts an above-normal season, with up to 19 storms and five major hurricanes.

Georgia, still recovering from last year’s deadly Hurricane Helene, is one of the states where residents are urged to prepare, especially those living in inland communities vulnerable to flooding and wind damage.

Experts advise checking trees near homes, sealing gaps, and upgrading roofs before storms hit.

The season runs through Nov. 30.

State Sen. John F. Kennedy, R-Macon, launched his campaign for Georgia lieutenant governor, joining state Sen. Steve Gooch of Dahlonega as announced candidates in a race that could draw several more hopefuls.

Current Lt. Gov. Burt Jones is expected to run for governor, leaving the seat open.

Kennedy, an attorney and the top-ranking Republican in the state Senate, hopes to draw support from the business community after helping pass the state’s tort reform bill this year. He also pushed legislation combating chronic student absenteeism.

Kennedy said his campaign will focus on the economy, education, and public safety.

“All in all, the island is a charming enclave of natural beauty, locally-owned stores, and family-friendly activities,” the publication’s authors said.

St. Simons Island was also recently named one of the best small towns for a summer getaway and one of the best places to retire on the East Coast.
