Article Icon 1Heat Grips State

Parts of Georgia began the week under a heat advisory, as the “feels like” heat index soared past 100 degrees in parts of the state.

The heat is likely to persist through the week. Actual daytime high temperatures are expected to top 90 degrees in many areas. Isolated thunderstorms are possible.

The National Weather Service offered tips on how to beat the heat, advising residents to drink plenty of water and monitor children, the elderly, and pets.

Looking ahead, fall may offer little relief. The Farmers’ Almanac and the Old Farmer’s Almanac predict a warmer and drier-than-normal autumn across Georgia.

A court ruling forced the Atlanta Police Foundation to release internal records, showing the group lobbied to block a 2023 referendum on the Cop City police training center project.

“A city can’t use police foundations as a way of getting around providing public records,” Matt Scott, executive director of Atlanta Community Press Collective, said of the ruling.

Meanwhile, the first trial in Georgia’s racketeering case against Cop City protesters ended in a mistrial earlier this month. An additional 60 defendants await legal proceedings.

Article Icon 1Federal School Grants Unfrozen

The U.S. Department of Education will release the approximately $200 million in federal education grants for Georgia that were put on hold pending a nationwide grants review by President Trump’s administration.

The grants help fund after-school and summer enrichment programs.

The federal government paused the grant program to conduct a review of how some states were using the funding. The release of the money comes with the stipulation that states certify compliance with civil rights laws.
