Rain continued across much of Georgia and eastern Alabama on Monday, extending a threat of localized flooding into this evening.

In Alabama near the Georgia border, one person died and another was rescued from a tree after a vehicle was swept away in flooding.

High temperatures struggled to reach 70 degrees in places, well below August norms. In Atlanta, the last time the temperature didn’t hit at least 70 degrees in August was in 2013.

Former Tennessee college football coach Derek Dooley announced his 2026 bid for U.S. Senate, adding to the Republican field aiming to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff.

With close ties to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, Dooley joins a GOP primary field that includes U.S. Reps. Mike Collins and Buddy Carter, both of whom are closely aligned with President Trump.

A political novice, Dooley, 57, is the son of the late Georgia football coach Vince Dooley. He is pitching himself as a “Georgia First” political outsider.

Students are returning to class across much of Georgia this week.

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System rolled out new attendance rules, a remote learning option, and upgraded security with panic buttons.

In Atlanta, students were welcomed with music and red carpets.

Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods said literacy, mental health, and added support for at-risk students are among the areas of emphasis for schools this year.
