Article Icon 1Winner Says Voters Sent Message

Republican Jason Dickerson credited conservatives for his wide margin of victory in his state Senate runoff win against Democrat Debra Shigley on Tuesday, a race that drew national attention.

“Conservatives in District 21 sent a strong message: woke liberal ideology has no place here. I’m looking forward to taking office and fulfilling their mandate to champion the America First values that make us the greatest state to live, work, and raise a family,” said Dickerson, a Cherokee County resident and president of a private investment firm.

Dickerson won 61.5% of the vote, according to preliminary results. He replaces Brandon Beach, who was named U.S. Treasurer in March.

Democrats cited gains made by Shigley, noting that Beach won 70% of the vote in his last election. “Tonight’s overperformance showed once again that voters are making their opposition (to Republican policies) known at the ballot box,” said Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, who visited Georgia this past weekend to support Shigley.

Article Icon 1Peak Fall Colors Coming Soon

North Georgia’s fall colors are expected to peak in mid to late October, with metro Atlanta following in early November, according to climate forecasts.

Cooler mornings are helping brighten foliage, though dry September weather may somewhat mute the display.

Top leaf-watching spots include Amicalola Falls, Cloudland Canyon, and Blue Ridge, which was recently ranked a top 10 fall destination by USA Today.

For campers, state officials recommend booking sites early, as demand surges during peak leaf season.
