Article Icon 1 Judges Recuse Themselves in Willis Case

Three judges have recused themselves from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ legal battle to block subpoenas from the Georgia State Senate.

The Senate committee seeks Willis’ testimony regarding her criminal investigation into 2020 election interference and her connections with Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor she hired while in a relationship with him.

Willis argues that the Senate’s broad demands for documents could compromise her case. She has requested a permanent injunction to prevent their enforcement.

The three judges all cited conflicts of interest as reasons for recusing themselves, with one judge noting his role in overseeing related election interference cases.

Fulton County has appointed an independent monitoring team for this year’s general election, despite conflicts over the selection process between the state Election Board and the county.

The county proceeded under the legal guidance of the state Attorney General, who confirmed that the county’s voluntary agreement to establish a monitoring team was lawful.

The county approved a $99,600 contract with Ryan Germany, the former chief counsel for the Secretary of State’s office. Germany’s team will receive additional support from the Carter Center.
