Article Icon 1Republicans Talk Shutdown, Subsidies

Republican U.S. Senate hopefuls U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, and Derek Dooley discussed the partial federal government shutdown and other issues as they bid to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Rome, released a statement in support of expanded Obamacare health insurance subsidies, seeming to break ranks with fellow Republicans on a key issue at the center of the shutdown debate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, sought to downplay Greene’s comments, noting she isn’t on the committees discussing the subsidy issue.

Meanwhile, the state’s Democratic congressional delegation called for Republicans to support higher subsidies.

Farmers and state officials urged motorists to slow down around heavy equipment after several deadly crashes on rural roads.

Speaking at a safety awareness event at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, they noted that crashes involving farm vehicles led to 15 deaths and 50 people seriously injured between 2020 and 2024.

Harvest is a particularly risky time, the group noted.

“We are just trying to encourage people to just take it a little easy when you see a big piece of … equipment out there on the road,” Macon County farmer Donald Chase said.

Article Icon 1Leaves Could Change Early in Mountains

The fall colors in the North Georgia mountains could peak earlier than the typical late-October timeframe due to drier-than-usual weather, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

“It’s been a little dry this fall so far, so we’re already starting to see a few trees here and there go orange and red,” agency spokesman Austin Suhr said. Typically, peak leaf-peeping season begins after Oct. 20, he said.

The state’s Leaf Watch 2025 website provides updates and photos from this year’s season.

Many weather forecasters expect drier-than-usual conditions to persist into the winter.
