Only about 20% of Georgia voters turned out for Tuesday’s election for two long-delayed Public Service Commission races.

Democrats Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard won PSC seats by wide margins, marking the party’s first statewide wins in two decades. Their campaigns focused on rising energy costs.

GOP incumbent Fitz Johnson, citing the low turnout, plans to run when the same seat comes up again next year, saying that he’s “certain the underlying policies offered by the Democrats do not reflect the preferences of the majority of Georgians.”

In other election results, Marietta Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin beat his 24‑year‑old challenger to secure a fifth term. In Sandy Springs, Mayor Rusty Paul heads to a December runoff after a multi‑candidate race.

Sandy Springs-based UPS issued a statement of condolence after one of its cargo jets crashed and exploded during takeoff on Tuesday in Louisville, Kentucky, killing at least 12 people.

“We are terribly saddened by the accident tonight in Louisville. UPS is committed to the safety of our employees, our customers, and the communities we serve. This is particularly true of Louisville, home to our airline and thousands of UPSers,” the company said.

The MD-11 caught fire on the left wing before an engine reportedly detached, causing the plane to slam into nearby businesses. The fire spread through an industrial area.

Georgia and Georgia Tech gained a clearer picture of where their postseason chances stand after this week’s release of the first College Football Playoff rankings.

The No. 5 Bulldogs can point to wins over Ole Miss and Tennessee, but need some help reaching the SEC title game after a loss to No. 4 Alabama.

The No. 17 Yellow Jackets were dinged by a road loss to NC State and face skepticism from a playoff selection committee that favors SEC and Big 12 teams with stronger schedules.

The two teams will get more chances to boost their resumes, including against each other in a game set for Nov. 28 in Atlanta.
