School District Sues Social Media Giants

DeKalb County School District filed a lawsuit against Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat, seeking up to $4.3 billion over 15 years to fund programs to address student social media addiction.

The district’s lawsuit is one of six bellwether cases in a nationwide legal challenge involving more than 1,000 school systems. Social media companies argue there’s no evidence their platforms harm students.

The district gave an estimate of its spending thus far on such programs: At least $4.3 million, used to fund website blocking technology, smartphone storage pouches, and other purchases.

Additional costs stem from the time teachers and administrators must spend responding to social media-related issues, said Davis Vaughn, the attorney representing the district in the case.

Fruit Stand Ripe for Meth Bust

A fruit stand raided last month in Paulding County was a front for meth trafficking, according to authorities.

The fruit stand’s owner, who was cleared of wrongdoing, said he was not aware of the drug deals. He said he was simply trying to help one of the suspects by hiring her to perform odd jobs at the stand.

Sheriff’s deputies seized 270 grams of meth, some hidden in a Krispy Kreme doughnut bag, from the stand along Marietta Highway. Two suspects were arrested, while a third remains at large.

Northern Lights Glow Over State

A strong geomagnetic storm lit up skies across north Georgia and much of the U.S. on Tuesday night, with the aurora borealis in view as far south as metro Atlanta.

The so-called northern lights stem from powerful solar flares that send bursts of charged particles toward Earth.
