Article Icon 1Farmers Praise Tax Relief

Georgia farmers praised the newly adopted federal budget, which reduces the burden of estate taxes, aids peanut farmers, and funds more agricultural research, among other initiatives.

One farm industry champion said the bill’s passage marks a major legislative victory for America’s agricultural community, especially cattle producers and family-run farms.

The estate tax change saves a lot of family farms and will hopefully keep that next generation in production agriculture,” said state Sen. Russ Goodman, R-Cogdell, a seventh-generation farmer.

A 21-year-old Savannah College of Art and Design student was among the more than 100 victims who died in the Texas floods this past weekend.

Joyce Catherine Badon, a senior architecture major from Beaumont, Texas, was staying with friends at a home in Hunt, Texas, when the flooding hit.

“A beloved daughter, friend, and classmate, Joyce was passionate about using her artistry and talent to impact the world, and had recently helped redesign donation centers for Goodwill,” the school said.

Badon sent her family a final text that said “We’re being washed away” before losing contact.

Retirees are flocking to Georgia, which ranks as the No. 5 state in the nation for net migration among people aged 60 and older, according to a study.

Already home to more than 2.3 million people aged 60+, the state drew nearly 14,000 more retirees than left in 2023, based on the study’s review of U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Georgia ranked behind Florida, North Carolina, Arizona, and South Carolina.

The study also listed the top 10 cities attracting retirees, but no Georgia city made that list. Cities with the biggest retiree exodus included New York City, Los Angeles, and Denver.
