GOP Begins Push to End State Income Tax
A group of top Republican state lawmakers met to begin exploring plans to eliminate the state’s income tax.
“We’ve got to be looking for ways to keep us competitive and make it where we have a competitive advantage over states that we are competing with all the time,” said Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, a leader of the group and a 2026 candidate for governor.
Meeting participants also praised the initiative as a way to help working families and small businesses, enabling “hardworking Georgians to keep their money in their pockets,” said state Sen. Blake Tillery, R–Vidalia.
Critics say a change could harm funding for important state services. Republicans say part of their work will focus on exploring funding offsets, such as the elimination of tax breaks.
