Article Icon 1Georgia National Guard Troops Head to DC

Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Friday that the state will deploy over 300 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., in support of President Trump’s efforts to crackdown on crime.

“Georgia is proud to stand with the Trump administration in its mission to ensure the security and beauty of our nation’s capital,” Kemp said in a statement. “We share a commitment to upholding public safety and are grateful to these brave Guardsmen and women.”

Last month, the president declared a public safety emergency in the district to combat a surge in crime and restore public safety and order.

Georgia becomes the eighth state to contribute National Guard troops to the effort. The troops are scheduled to arrive in mid-September to relieve personnel from other states who were previously deployed.

The Atlanta Falcons begin their 2025 NFL season today with their Week 1 divisional matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

A notable storyline for the team is the health of wide receiver Darnell Mooney, who is considered a game-time decision due to a right shoulder injury he suffered during the first practice of training camp.

The game will mark quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s first start in a season opener. Penix was named the starting quarterback late last season, replacing Kirk Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in March 2024.

Last season, the Falcons won both matchups against the Buccaneers.

A fish unique to the Savannah River system has been officially recognized as a new species, named the Bartram’s Bass.

Previously referred to as the Redeye Bass, this species is named after 18th-century naturalist William Bartram, who explored the Southeast.

Typically under 14 inches long, the bass is characterized by its light gold flanks, rose-colored fin tips, blotchy belly, and gold-ringed red eyes.
