Flight School Theft Claims Top $500K

Twenty-two additional students have come forward over the past two weeks, claiming that a Peachtree City flight school drained their prepaid accounts, bringing the total to more than 70.

Authorities arrested former FLYT Aviation owners Harlan Hamlin and Alex Hamlin on Sept. 4. The school’s financial account director, Teresa Roberson, later turned herself in.

The alleged losses now total more than $500,000, including one former student who reported $80,000 gone.

Students began flagging discrepancies after the Hamlins sold the business in October 2024.

All three suspects face racketeering and theft charges. No court dates have been set.

Funding Awarded for Augusta Veterans Cemetery

The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded Georgia more than $13.6 million to build a state veterans cemetery on 200 acres off Tobacco Road in Augusta.

The veterans cemetery will be the biggest in the state, with 600 casketed gravesites, 1,500 pre-placed crypts, 900 in-ground cremation plots, and 960 columbarium niches. Groundbreaking is set for November, and construction should take 18 months.

Currently, the nearest veterans cemeteries to Augusta are located in Columbia, South Carolina, and Milledgeville. The site will not impose residency requirements.

The grant will fund much of the cemetery’s infrastructure, but $700,000 is needed for additional features, including flagpoles, visitor benches, and a bell tower. A nonprofit is working through the CSRA Community Foundation to secure the remaining funds.

Tybee Island Gets Beach Renourishment Funds

Tybee Island has landed $12 million in federal funding for a beach renourishment project designed to address erosion.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ $12 million share brings the project’s funding total to $20 million; the city raised the other $8 million. Crews will place about 1.3 million cubic yards of sand along the shoreline.

The city says erosion has caused sand volume at its beaches to decline by 60% since 2020.

Work is expected to begin this December, and Rep. Buddy Carter said the project had to be scheduled within a limited timeframe due to sea turtle nesting season.
