Nichiha USA, a Japanese building material company, is set to close its Plant 1 in Macon on Dec. 5, resulting in 171 jobs being cut.

While Plant One focuses on residential products, the company will continue operations at its Plant 2, which specializes in commercial products.

“Macon has been more than just a place of business. It has been a true home for the company, our employees, and their families. While this decision was extremely difficult, it is necessary to build a stronger foundation for long-term success,” said Nichiha USA President and CEO Takayuki Okada.

The company says it is committed to providing support to affected employees.

  Article Icon 1Paulding County Student Dies During Field Trip

A 6-year-old McGarity Elementary School student died during a field trip to Carlton Farms in Rockmart on Oct. 8.

The girl was found unresponsive in a pool on the property after staff realized she was missing. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital she was taken to.

“Our hearts are with the student’s family and loved ones. As our school community processes this tragedy, we will offer counseling and bereavement support services to all students and staff,” McGarity Elementary School Principal Jamesa Hodge stated in a letter.

The farm has postponed all activities following the incident.

State officials are now investigating the death.
