Article Icon 1Blank Foundation Donates Millions to Hurricane Relief

Arthur M. Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons and co-founder of The Home Depot, has committed $2.5 million toward relief efforts for Hurricane Melissa through his charitable organization.

Of that donation, $1.5 million will be directed to World Central Kitchen to provide meals and clean water in the hardest‑hit zones. The remaining $1 million will support Team Rubicon for on‑the‑ground disaster response and recovery.

“Jamaica and the Caribbean hold a special place in my heart, filled with meaningful family memories. The impact of Hurricane Melissa is profound, but so is the resilience of people in this region,” Arthur M. Blank said in a statement.

As of Saturday, the death toll from Hurricane Melissa has surpassed 50 as recovery efforts begin amid widespread destruction.

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, numerous U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) parks and recreational areas at Lake Lanier, Allatoona Lake, and West Point Lake have closed until further notice as of Oct. 31.

Powerhouses and navigation locks will continue to operate despite the closures. It is currently unknown if affected employees will be furloughed.

Earlier this year, USACE closed 11 recreational sites at Lake Lanier due to staffing shortages.

Article Icon 1Carter’s to Close Stores, Reduce Workforce

Carter’s, an Atlanta-based children’s clothing retailer, announced plans to close 150 stores nationwide and cut 300 jobs over the next three years.

The move is expected to save the company around $35 million per year.

“Elevated product costs, in part due to the impact of higher tariffs, as well as additional investment, weighed meaningfully on our profitability,” said Douglas C. Palladini, Carter’s Chief Executive Officer & President.

The company has not yet shared the specific locations it will be closing but stated in a company release that it would be “closing low-margin retail stores, right-sizing our organization, and honing product choices.”
