Article Icon 1Parents Not Guilty In Hernandez Child Abuse Trial

In a closely watched child abuse case in Forsyth County, Matthew and Wilairat Hernandez were acquitted of all four felony charges related to the alleged abuse of their infant daughter.

In June 2023, the couple brought their two-month-old daughter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta due to unexplained markings she’s had since birth. After claiming to rule out all medical possibilities, medical staff suspected abuse after finding rib and leg fractures on the child. This led to the couple being charged with two counts each of first-degree cruelty to children and aggravated battery.

Rib fractures, which are highly specific for abuse, corner fractures, which are highly specific for abuse, the bruise on the scalp—these are consistent with child physical abuse,” child abuse pediatrician Stephen Messner told jurors.

Throughout the trial, the defense argued that the child’s injuries were the result of an undiagnosed medical condition, not abuse.

Following the verdict, the couple expressed relief at the outcome and emphasized the need for systemic changes to prevent similar situations for other families.

Nearly two decades after the 2006 murder of Doris Worrell in Douglas, her husband, Jon Worrell, was arrested and charged with her murder earlier this week.

Initially, the case was believed to be a botched robbery, but suspicions later turned toward Jon, who fled to Costa Rica with the family’s nanny after the murder—the same nanny whose cooperation with authorities led to the arrest of the husband.

Investigators discovered that Jon had been having an affair with the nanny at the time of Doris’s death and feared losing custody of his children in a divorce, which officials say motivated the murder plot.

It’s here. We fought the fight, and we didn’t give up,” said Doris’s sister, LeAnn Tuggle. “This is the day we’ve been waiting on for almost 20 years.”

Article Icon 113 Convicted In Human Trafficking Case

Thirteen individuals have been convicted in a multi-year sex trafficking case that began with the recovery of a 17-year-old female from a hotel in Fulton County after an investigation revealed she had been repeatedly trafficked by multiple individuals across various motels in the Atlanta area.

The victim, initially reported missing from Kansas City, Missouri, was recovered in August 2020 during “Operation Not Forgotten,” a multi-jurisdictional effort led by the U.S. Marshals Service and Georgia law enforcement that has resulted in the rescue of 26 children.

The latest conviction was for Terry Florence, a 34-year-old man from Conyers, who has been indicted on seven counts of trafficking and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Attorney General Chris Carr emphasized the importance of persistent efforts to locate missing children, stating, “Behind every seller is a line of buyers, and we must do all we can to take them down before another child is abused and exploited.”
