Article Icon 1Atlanta Running Legend Dies at 80

Jeff Galloway, the Atlanta running legend who won the first Peachtree Road Race in 1970 and competed for the 1972 U.S. Olympic team, has died at age 80 after suffering a stroke.

Galloway was honored with a memorial run and a moment of silence on the Atlanta Beltline earlier this week.

Beyond his competitive career, Galloway was known for developing the run-walk-run strategy, which alternates running and walking to help reduce injury and fatigue.

“His run/walk training philosophy empowered millions—making the sport more accessible, sustainable, and welcoming for all. Not only was he a champion, he was a colleague, a coach, and a friend to so many in our community,” the Atlanta Track Club said in a statement.

Milani Jewelers, located on DeKalb Industrial Way in Decatur, was raided by law enforcement last week as part of a multi-state investigation into a $50 million gold bar fraud scheme.

Fraudsters posing as law enforcement would contact victims, primarily senior citizens, and pressure them into withdrawing cash and purchasing gold, which is then handed to couriers.

Investigators allege the gold acquired from victims was later moved through a network of businesses, including the Decatur store, where it was laundered into jewelry. The jewelry was then sold to customers or smuggled out of the U.S.

Twenty people have been arrested so far in connection with the case.
