Article Icon 1Harsh Weather Impacts Holiday Travel

Inclement weather struck Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Friday evening, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays during one of the busiest travel periods of the summer.

Severe thunderstorms, including quarter-inch hail that prompted Delta to ground nearly 100 planes for overnight inspections, led to flash flood warnings across Metro Atlanta on Friday.

Strong winds also contributed to travel issues, forcing most of the personnel from the airport’s air traffic control tower to evacuate.

There is a daily chance of thunderstorms for the week ahead, although the Fourth of July holiday is forecasted to be mostly dry and hot.

The mother of a 14-year-old student killed in the 2024 Apalachee High School shooting in Winder is preparing to file a $25 million lawsuit against the Barrow County School System, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and others, alleging a lack of adequate action in response to earlier concerns about the shooter.

This legal action arrives nearly a year after the tragic mass shooting that claimed four lives—two students and two teachers—and injured nine others.

Our priority remains the well-being and safety of our students, staff, and families,” Barrow County School System said in a statement. “We are committed to maintaining a supportive learning environment while serving our community with integrity and transparency.”

Article Icon 1Atlanta Medical Center Set For Demolition

The demolition of an Atlanta Medical Center that closed in fall 2022 and stood for more than 120 years is slated for Monday, July 1.

No other healthcare facilities are expected to replace the center. Instead, there are plans to redevelop the 22‑acre site into a mixed-use “community hub” featuring housing, green space, retail, and office space.

Critics of the redevelopment plans believe that not having a hospital replacement will prove problematic to the community.

Wellstar, the healthcare provider that closed the hospital, says that the redevelopment project will include “health and well‑being resources.”
