Article Icon 1 Atlanta Food Bank Sees Increase In Demand

The Atlanta Community Food Bank has experienced a 60% jump in monthly meal demand over the past three years.

According to Feeding America, one in five children and one in 10 seniors in Georgia face food insecurity.

“Economic pressures and inflation continue to impact our neighbors, and as a result, more children, seniors, and families are struggling to meet their basic food needs,” said Sarah Fonder-Kristy, Chief Development Officer of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

The need spans all counties across the state, and for those who are interested in donating or volunteering their time to help support hunger relief efforts in Georgia, visit the Atlanta Community Food Bank at www.acfb.org.

The Conservation Fund has successfully purchased approximately 7,700 acres of land near Okefenokee Swamp, including mineral rights, from Twin Pines Minerals for $60 million, effectively halting the proposed titanium mining project.

This acquisition concludes a six-year campaign by environmental groups to prevent mining activities that pose risks to the swamp’s ecosystem.

The purchase aims to protect the land permanently and ensure public access.

The Okefenokee is the largest U.S. refuge east of the Mississippi River covering over 600 square miles and is home to over 400 animal species.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, Georgia peaches are being exported to Mexico, ending a ban that had been in place since 1994 due to pest concerns.

Thanks to USDA-approved Electronic Cold-Pasteurization technology developed by Atlanta-based Reveam, Georgia peaches now meet Mexico’s import standards.

The development provides Georgia growers access to a lucrative consumer base that includes Mexico City, which imported about $46 million worth of peaches and nectarines in 2024.
